![]() ![]() While I certainly loved some stories more than others, the only real complaint I have about this collection is that I want more from each of these stories! I could easily see quite a few of these becoming the basis for much longer books. Tananarive Due has the ability to truly transport the reader into the world’s she creates. Each story is incredibly unique with fascinating premises that challenge the reader to second guess what they’re reading and whether these things could be real. This book is broken down into four sections, each containing a series of related stories. Tananarive Due has put together a collection of short stories ranging from the strange occurrences in the small Florida town of Gracetown, post-apocalyptic stories, and other strange tales of science fiction and horror. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Part 1, Klein contextualizes her appropriation of the term “shock therapy” in its origin in psychology. ![]() The Shock Doctrine consists of seven parts, each of which attacks political shock therapy from a different angle. ![]() ![]() Though the book has been criticized for perceived oversimplification of political issues, it has been lauded by other critics for illuminating an under-examined social epidemic. Klein condemns this kind of legislating, arguing that it serves only the few who exploit the system, damaging society as a whole. Klein looks at several important recent geopolitical events, including America’s Iraq War, which exploited crises (for example, the 9/11 bombings in New York City) to galvanize support for issues that would not have been promoted democratically under neutral conditions. In Klein’s view, this happens through the mechanism of “shock therapy,” through which nations take advantage of crisis moments to strategically introduce new legislation when a country’s constituents are too emotional to grasp the issues at hand or employ reason. Canadian writer and political activist Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism (2007) levies a critique of neoliberalism, arguing that the policies of the free market, particularly those elucidated and popularized by economist Milton Friedman, are being advanced with little democratic consent. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And, perfectly as you would expect from a book like this, Stewart and Small bookend their book. and pleasure." I especially love that Stewart and Small include an image of violinists, reading sheet music from a book - one form of reading a book that, as far as I know, is still only read in a tangible, paper format and not a digital one. And, of course, books lead us to "find knowledge and happiness. ![]() " to be: a friend, a chew toy, a comfort item, and to "think about what I just saw - then close the book and try to draw." ![]() But like HAL in 2001 A Space Odyssey or Colossus, The Forbin Project the super artificial brain starts to take over everything. This involves a family winning a contest to live as guinea pigs in a futuristic house that is completely computer controlled. One of the more clever Disney television movies is definitely Smart House. ![]() Overall this is not really worth your time as it is something "The Simpsons" managed to do in 30 minutes and even their version seemed more realistic and less insulting than this. No Disney Original Movie is going to be very good and this follows all the clichés - bad actors, bad script, inept director at the helm (probably a TV veteran and first-timer when it comes to film-making). Ryan Merriman plays the whiz-kid genius who wanted to win the house, then decides, "Hey, Dad, maybe we shouldn't have moved in here".after having complained about wanting to throughout the entire beginning of the film. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this case the glitch is a visual representation of a woman who seems to think she's the mother of the new family that's moved in.she takes control of their lives and locks them inside the house. This aired on Disney a few years back as one of their infamous "Original Movies." The concept is something from a "Simpsons" Halloween episode: a computer home is won by a family and they move in only to find their lives dominated by a glitch in the system. ![]() ![]() ![]() When I first read this book over ten years ago it felt like I was reading my own journal (if my journal was written in incredibly eloquent prose). “Drinking: A Love Story” by Caroline Knapp ![]() Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments. There are a few I have on my list to read once I’m done with my own book: My Fair Junkie by Amy Dresner, The Recovering by Leslie Jameson, and I’m Just Happy to Be Hereby Janelle Hanchett. And I am of the mind that we can never have enough of these stories-the more, the better-because even though they typically follow the same line, they are all as unique as we are. I know there are dozens of other fantastic books out there. ![]() The stories helped me look at my own story before I was ready. ![]() Long before I got sober, I read about sobriety and addiction. Note: there are a mix of recovery paths represented in this list (read: AA, but not only AA), which is important to me.
